Replacement and Repair

Roofing 101

Reroofing, roof replacement, roof repairYour roof protects your home or building and everything inside.  All roofing materials have a lifespan. Their longevity is affected by many factors, including weather.

Knowing some basics about roofing will help you make informed decisions when you need to replace or repair your roof. Raymond Hardin Roofing will do a free inspection and give you an honest assessment of your roofing needs.

Reroofing

Reroofing adds new roofing over an existing shingle roof. Reroofing costs less than roof replacement because the existing shingles do not have to be removed. Building codes allow only two layers of shingles, so reroofing can be done only once.

Some local building codes allow metal roofing to be installed over existing shingles. Eliminating the shingle tear-off lowers the installation cost, but the roofer will have to use vented metal or build a ventilation pocket between the layers to avoid moisture from collecting and causing mold and rot.

Reroofing is an option only if the decking is solid and the existing roof is free of any major leaks, decay, or missing shingles. Any major problems are likely to recur with reroofing, so roof replacement is usually a better option.
